What is Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a person's social communication, behavior, and cognitive functioning (Oesch, 2019). However, according to (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (2023), autism spectrum disorder is a brain development that affects how a person sees and socializes with others, producing difficulties with social interaction and communication. The condition also exhibits restricted and repetitive behavioral patterns. The term "spectrum" refers to the vast variety of symptoms and severity in autism spectrum disorder; therefore, autism is not a disease; it is a mental condition that varies from person to person.


The Positive Effects of Hiring Individuals with Autism

According to (Giannantonio & Hurley-Hanson (2023), employers who recruit people with ASD benefit from a workforce with desired knowledge, skills, and talents, boosting the pool of intellectual capital associated with a more varied workforce and strengthening a company's reputation and social capital through diversity efforts. Employees with ASD have less absenteeism, are more likely to come on time, are more dependable, and have far lower turnover rates than neurotypical employees. As a result, the company should consider hiring ASD individuals alongside regular employees.

Autistic employees struggle with leadership and unfamiliar circumstances, and they require costly accommodations, which affects the bottom line. They lack potential and dependability, offering them uninterested in advancing in their careers (Magro, 2023)

Many large organizations, like Microsoft, SAP, IKEA and HP Enterprise/DXC Technology (HPE/DXC), have begun particularly recruiting and training individuals who have autism in the current global market.

It is critical to accommodate autistic people in the workplace for their well-being and productivity. Employers must take the initiative to understand and accommodate the particular requirements of employees with ASD, establishing a more inclusive workplace culture. This creates a happy and welcoming work atmosphere, which improves employee retention, productivity, and general well-being.
